Automatic Setup For Wireless Connection
1. Click on the Start button and select Connect To from the menu on the right to display the Connect to a network dialog box.
2. The list of available networks will depend on the types of wireless networks detected, such as infrastructure mode or ad hoc mode networks. If you see the name of your Network, double click it to proceed to the next screen. If you see other Networks in the list, they are probably your neighbors…hopefully they are all secured just like yours!
If you do not see your Network, follow the steps described below for Manually Setup A Wireless Connection below.
3. Enter Security Key or PassPhrase (from the information found from your router or access point). Check Display Characters to view characters/numbers being typed. Click Connect.
4. At the next screen, Vista will attempt to connect to your wireless router or access point. Once the connection is established, you will be prompted to save your connection by checking the Save this network and Start this connection automatically boxes.
Click Close. You will now be connected to the wireless network.

Strong Passwords August 3, 2009
Posted by Beach Middle in FYI.add a comment
Just in case your missed the email from DOT:
In an effort to increase the security of our systems, we are changing the password requirements and adding a new rule to our spam filter. These changes will take effect July 17th, 2009.
Strong Passwords:
Your Windows password must meet minimum complexity requirements. This means the next time you change your password, it will need to meet the following conditions:
- It cannot closely mimic your user ID.
- It must be eight characters long or more
- It must contain characters from at least three of the four categories below:
o English uppercase characters (A through Z)
o English lowercase characters (a through z)
o Numeric characters (0 through 9)
o Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
Here are a couple of examples of acceptable passwords: “VBCPSis#1“, “22GreatStudents!“, “3BlindMice”
Please note that student passwords already follow these requirements.
You’ll see this change the first time you change your password.
Spam Rule:
Any email message that is sent without a subject line will probably be treated as spam and will not be delivered. If a ‘blank subject line’ email is sent from an internal (vbschools) email account, the sender will receive a message explaining why it was not delivered. However, if the email is from an outside sender, it will not be delivered to your inbox and the sender will not be notified that the message was not delivered.
If you have questions about either of these security related policies, please contact the Help Desk (263-1111; Option #2) or reply directly to me via email.
